The breakthrough is that it allows the climber to release the line in a controlled manner, even under tension. This self-braking descender has a pivoting cam that feeds the lanyard as necessary, but grips when a load is applied.
In addition, there is a handle that allows a controlled release of line even under tension. Not to be used on wire core lines.
