History

Anden Van Beek began the business by working in his father’s repair shop. His experience operating the various machining equipment available proved invaluable when, in 1980, he began manufacturing replacement parts for tractors and combines. Soon a reputation for high quality parts at a reasonable price was established. That reputation continues today.

In 1991 his burgeoning business became A&I Products, employing a staff of 27 people. Soon business growth necessitated the purchase of property and the construction of a new machine shop, as well as an office & warehouse complex. Another warehouse was built in Rock Valley, IA adjacent to the existing warehouse in 2001 and was expanded in 2004 and again in 2008. Today the three buildings occupy over 460,000 square feet. Currently over 55,000 different parts are distributed through a network of over 12,000 distributing dealers. This is made possible with the hard work and dedication of over 360 employees.

Vapormatic specializes primarily in engine components and accessories for all major European models of tractors. These parts include a complete line of engine kits, tractor parts, new and remanufactured clutches, drivelines, seats, bearings, baler belting, radiators, front-end parts, cutter parts, mufflers, drive chain, belts, combine parts, hitch and linkage parts.

Edcor
In 2004, A&I Products acquired Edcor Inc. Through Edcor, A&I Products offers a wider range of PTO driveline assemblies, as well as a more extensive list of replacement components for many of the major suppliers for many of the major brands such as: Agmaster, Binacchi, Bondioli & Pavesi, Comer, Neapco, Walterscheid. A&I Products also extends its product line into metric bearings and metric seals along with a large offering of parts for many brands of hay equipment.

Auburn Clutch & Rockford Mechanical and Custom Clutch
In 2004 and 2005 Auburn Clutch & Rockford Mechanical and Custom Clutch was acquired by A&I Products. A&I Products became a supplier to many OEM suppliers.

STE
In 2006, A&I Products acquired STE. STE is located in Huntington, IN. The 15,000 sq ft facility has the capacity to do metal stampings, tool and die fabrication and prototyping. Much of the STE efforts are spent stamping Rockford and Auburn clutch parts.

Loewen Manufacturing
In 2007, Loewen Manufacturing was acquired by A & I Products. Loewen was established in 1959 and produces a greater range of quality combine parts for more make and models of combines than anyone else. By bringing this product range into an already strong product offering, A & I will be able to offer the most complete catalog of combine parts in the industry.

How to tell which clutch you have in your IH tractor…Rockford or Auburn

T

he other day one of my customers called to see if we could get a clutch disk for his Farmall Model A tractor. As I was looking up the clutch disk the question arose. Which clutch do you have in your tractor, a Rockford or an Auburn, and what is the difference? Doing a quick google search… or more appropriately a long google search, I came across some confusing information. Differences in the serial number tags (letters following the numbers), serial number breaks, different flywheels, etc. There were also more questions than answers, so I did a little bit of research myself and this is what I came up with.

Compare the design of the pressure plates.

As you can see the Auburn Clutch is a basic triangle design and has only three springs.

The Rockford clutch on the other hand is more of a circular design and has six springs.

I quickly checked to see if the parts book called for different flywheels for the different manufactures (I only checked the Farmall A and the Super A) but there was only one flywheel specified and the options of either a Rockford and Auburn could be installed. There were also no serial number breaks specified for either clutch. Which leads me to believe that either pressure plate will bolt up… I must admit I dont have first hand experience to back this up and they certainly don’t look like the bolt patterns will match. The parts manuals are, however, silent if the flywheel needs to be changed.

* CAUTION* Most of the new supply of clutch parts are of the Rockford design and are not compatible with the Auburn parts.

There is a wealth of information available to the owner published by the Original Manufacturer and by After Market publishers. In this article we will look at some of the options available.

Tractor Model Data

Tractor model data is an assortment of basic data relating to a specific tractor that typically involves Model, Year Built, Serial Number Breaks by year, Variations (things like transmission and engine options), Fluid Capacities, Horsepower, Hitch Category and Original Price. A couple of places that you can find such data online are Tisco and TractorData.com. This is valuable information if you are in the market for a used tractor and want to compare different makes and models as you sort out which tractor may meet you needs. It is also a good tool for information on some of the older more obscure  models and makes. Occasionally  on TractorData.com you will find links to information provided by individual collectors or clubs that will further flesh out the basic info.

Tractor Technical Manuals

Technical manuals provide step by step instructions for repairing your tractor. Tech Manuals include sections on…

• Engine repair
• Transmission repair
• Electrical testing, wiring diagrams and repair
• Hydraulic system testing, diagrams and repair
• Other systems and sub systems

Some manufacturers split the Technical manuals into Component Manuals addressing:

Technical Manuals can be purchased from:

Tractor Parts Manuals

Tractor parts manuals provide detailed parts breakdowns that are valuable for a several reasons.

1. Calling the dealership or an Aftermarket parts dealer with the actual part number removes the confusion of trying to identify the part or parts solely by description. A frustrating aspect of obtaining the correct part the first time you try to order are the almost endless options and serial number breaks used by the manufacturers as they updated tractor models during long production runs.
2. Entering the original part number in a Online Supplier search engine will many times take to directly to a replacement part and the option to order it and have it shipped right to your door.
3. You can use the parts manuals as a supplement to the Technical Manual as a “How to reassemble guide”. Modern Parts Manuals show the different systems and components in a “Exploded view” type arrangement that can be extremely valuable when reassembling a complex part of the tractor.

Parts manuals can be obtained from a variety of sources:

• Online Several manufacturers have made their parts books available online for your convenience.
• Local dealers. Call the dealer for your tractor brand and they will be able to sell you a OEM manual.
• Aftermarket manual companies like Jensales sell reproductions of old manuals.
• Tractor swap meets. Browsing at tractor shows can yield some hard to find and valuable info.

Tractor Operator Information

Operators manuals show some of the following information

• Operating instructions
• Illustrations of controls and gauges.
• Lubricating diagrams, levels, fluid types and instructions.
• Adjustments and maintenance schedules.
• Optional equipment and attachments and their operating instructions.
• And other information relating to the day to day care of your tractor

Free: Tractor operators manuals are typically supplied to the original buyer when a tractor is purchased new. I know of no comprehensive source of online operators manual information. Occasional information may be found on certain models where someone has taken the time to post it or a Tractor Club has devoted part of their website to a particular model. The best way to find whats out there is to do a online search and sort through the available information.

It allows consumers to comparison shop for their parts and supplies quickly and easily right in the comfort of their home or shop.
